The Los Angeles Clippers entered the summer of 2019 with championship dreams. The arrival of Kawhi Leonard and the blockbuster trade for Paul George were supposed to transform the franchise into an NBA powerhouse and potentially create a dynasty.
Instead, the seven-year Kawhi Leonard–Paul George era became one of the most expensive and controversial chapters in Clippers history.
In this video, we take a deep look at how the Clippers went from championship favorites to a franchise facing enormous financial costs, lost draft capital, injuries, playoff disappointments, and a controversial salary-cap investigation.

The story begins in 2019, when Kawhi Leonard joined the Clippers after winning an NBA championship and Finals MVP with the Toronto Raptors. Leonard’s arrival was followed by the blockbuster acquisition of Paul George from the Oklahoma City Thunder. To land George, the Clippers surrendered Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Danilo Gallinari, multiple first-round picks, and pick swaps.
At the time, the move appeared to make the Clippers one of the most talented teams in the NBA. Leonard and George were both elite two-way players in their primes, surrounded by a deep supporting cast.
But the championship expectations quickly became complicated.
The Clippers suffered a devastating collapse against the Denver Nuggets in the 2020 NBA playoffs after taking a 3-1 series lead. Despite having major leads in multiple games, Los Angeles could not close out the series. Kawhi Leonard and Paul George struggled in the decisive Game 7, while the team faced questions about chemistry, leadership, coaching, and consistency.
Doc Rivers was eventually replaced by Tyronn Lue, beginning a new chapter for the franchise.
Under Ty Lue, the Clippers became a more versatile and dangerous team. They advanced to the Western Conference Finals in 2021, but Kawhi Leonard suffered a serious knee injury during the playoffs. Without Leonard, the Clippers ultimately fell to the Phoenix Suns.
The injury problems continued.
Leonard missed the entire 2021–22 season, while Paul George dealt with injuries of his own. The Clippers continued spending heavily to surround their stars with talent, eventually assembling one of the most expensive rosters in NBA history.
The team added players such as Russell Westbrook and later James Harden, creating another superstar-heavy roster with championship ambitions.
The James Harden era brought another fascinating experiment. Harden, Leonard, and George had to figure out how three ball-dominant stars could coexist. For stretches, the Clippers looked like legitimate contenders, but injuries continued to prevent the team from reaching its full potential.
Paul George eventually left the Clippers in free agency in 2024, meaning Los Angeles received no direct return for the superstar it had originally paid a massive price to acquire.
Meanwhile, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander developed into one of the NBA’s elite players with Oklahoma City. The Thunder also used assets connected to the George trade to build a championship-level roster, making the original Clippers trade even more closely scrutinized.
The story then took another dramatic turn with allegations surrounding Kawhi Leonard, the Clippers organization, and potential salary-cap circumvention. Reports described an alleged endorsement arrangement involving Aspiration, a company backed by Clippers owner Steve Ballmer. The NBA subsequently investigated the matter.
This video also examines the reported investigation, the conflicting claims surrounding the allegations, the Clippers’ responses, and the eventual NBA punishment described in the story.
The consequences included significant financial penalties and draft-pick sanctions, adding another layer to a saga that had already cost the Clippers an enormous amount in salaries, luxury-tax payments, players, and future draft capital.
By looking at the entire timeline—from Leonard’s arrival and the Paul George trade to the playoff collapses, injuries, James Harden experiment, George’s departure, the rise of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and the salary-cap controversy—we can understand why this era became such a major talking point in NBA history.
Was the Kawhi Leonard and Paul George era one of the biggest failures of the modern NBA? How much did the Clippers actually give up? What did they receive in return? And how did one of the league’s most ambitious championship projects end up costing so much?
